2nd Legacy Deck: Mono Green Version 1.1

This deck is updated at the following website:
http://craig-hamilton-mtg.blogspot.com/2013/04/2nd-legacy-deck-mono-green-10_27.html
This deck is not nearly as competitive as my Legacy Infect deck, but it is still a very good deck.
Creatures
4 Dungrove Elder
4 Llanowar Elves
4 Sylvan Ranger (This card makes my deck as if I had 22 forests)
4 Timbermaw Larva
2 Deadly Recluse
1 Ambush Viper
2 Elvish Herder
2 Arbor Elf
1 Boreal Druid
1 Joraga Treespeaker
1 Fyndhorn Elder

Instants
4 Vines of Vastwood
4 Primal Bellow
1 Naturalize (this card would also work well with 3 others in a sideboard)

Sorcery
2 Cultivate (both Cultivate and Kodama’s reach would work well in a side board)
1 Kodama’s Reach  (Cultivate and Kodama’s Reach make it as is I have more than 18 forests, which is good especially with Sylvan Ranger)

Enchantment
4 Gigantiform

18 Forests

  1. You have way too many cards that ramp your mana and not a single expensive cmc bomb. The whole reason of ramp is so you can play some insane huge thing much earlier then otherwise allowed.

  2. I totally disagree. I ramp not so much to play big creatures, as to get my game on early. Basically, i am ramping many to play creatures/enchantments that cost 3-5 mana that are hopefully going to be game winners.

  3. But that's the thing none of your creatures are game winners lol they are mostly 1/1's.
15 out of your 26 creatures are 1/1's that only ramp mana that's way to many. 1 card like Pyroclasm and most of your deck shuts down.
That and you only have 3 actual ramp spells that go find more lands and put them into play which doesn't really make Timberclaw Larva all that effective. And it will take forever to get Dungrove Elder huge. Basically the deck as a whole isn't a good Legacy deck sad to say.
Legacy has way too many removal spells to deal with the 2 creatures that might actually be capable of dealing damage greater then 1 damage.
Also one last thing enchant creatures are usually terrible unless they are something like Rancor because your opponent can just kill your enchanted creature and 2 for 1 you.

  4. Yes, I do have a lot of creatures that are 1/1's. The main aim of having them is so that I can play Gigantiform on them which costs 5 mana and makes them into an 8/8 with trample. Some of them also work for defense.
Also, Pyroclism would probably not touch Dungrove Elder, while it would take care of Timbermaw Larva. I have a new version of this deck, where I am going to update it, such that it only has 2 Timbermaw Larva. I am looking to get Timbermaw Larva out of this deck, but I need another 2 cards that cost about 4 mana that are really slamming.
I do agree with you that this deck is not a great Legacy deck. However, I have won several games with it, when playing just for fun. I wouldn't use this deck in a tournament.

  5. Rancor might be useful. I might have an extra for this deck.

  6. Actually Pyroclasm would kill Dungrove Elder granted if it were only a 2/2 because Pyroclasm doesn't specifically target only the Elder.

  7. No kiddin'!!! Really? Seriously, I know not to play Dungrove Elder until it's at least it can be a 3/3.

  8. A part of the reason for this deck is that for the really good decks there isn't much choices out there. There are really only a few good Legacy decks. So, this is like the antidote to have a lighter side to Legacy format.

  9. There are actually lots of good legacy decks out there. Not sure where you're getting the idea that only a few good ones exist. I can ramble off a lot off the top of my head right now.

    1. I took my answer from someone whose been in the game since the very beginning, far longer than me. He said that there are only a few good decks. Likewise, for the 10s of thousands of MTG cards for the 11 decks you have listed, that means to me that you are essentially proving my point.

  10. Yeah but you haven't played competitive legacy so i mean you can't really do much judging seeing as you don't have any experience.

    1. I have played competative Legacy through Wizards of the West Coast, just not with this deck.
